I am a little confused by the answers to this question - the recount showed that Bush did actually lose the election! How could anyone still say he won?

He is the president, but he is not the president because he won the election, he is the president because he took advantage of a confused situation.

Yes, indisputably, he did win the election.

It got down to one state — Florida — where the vote was very close.  The initial count had Bush ahead by a slight margin.  The Sore/Loserman team demanded every possible different way of recounting the ballots (Remember all the nonsense about “hanging chads” and “pregnant chads” and such?) and every way they counted them, Bush was still slightly ahead.

There are those who point out that Gore was apparently ahead in the popular vote, but there are a few things that need to be stated about that.

First of all, the popular vote isn't how we elect a president.  I can understand the point of view that argues that it should be, but it isn't.

As counted, the popular vote was effectively a tie.  The slight lead by Algore was well within the expected margin of error.  If you think the recounts in Florida were a circus, imagine the recounts that would have had to take place to establish a solid result for the popular vote.  We would probably still — six years later — not have been able to establish a solid result.  This gets me into the next point…

I would say that the 2000 election demonstrates why the Electoral College system is more desirable than a straight vote.  In this instance, it worked exactly as it was supposed to, turning what would have been a tie, into a meaningful result.

And finally, because the popular vote isn't what matters, and because Gore had already solidly won California, the absentee votes from California were not counted and included in the popular vote statistics.  Historically, absentee votes have always tended to be significantly more conservative than non-absentee votes.  If the California absentee ballots had been counted, it is likely that they would have put Bush ahead in the popular vote.

He really acted like the president. He really moved into the White House. People really treated him like he won. So, I think he really won.

YES and just to add to Bob Blaylock’s great and very educational response; why would we want our President to be elected by only 3 or 4 coastal states?

    No.

If he had won the election, he wouldn't have had to be appointed by the supreme court.
He is not the president elect, he was not chosen by the people, he was appointed to the position.
If he had won, then they would have been able to count up the votes and say "He got the most.", but apparently, they couldn't do that.

Yes. The questions of ballots only came from strongholds of the oppiside party. Plus the questions were bizarre and most frivolus. Look up historical record of the newspapers at the time.

To the victor go the spoils.
And poor George has sure had his presidency "spoiled."

BTW: He's cashing the President's paycheck, must have had the right ID with him.

I am really confused here, are most of you joking or just plain ignorant and stupid?
There aren’t any honest doubts as to the validity of the elections; the Supreme Court did not give the election to GW.
Bush won every single count of the Florida votes and the POPULAR VOTE DOES MATTER as it directly affects the results of the Electoral College; that ultimately decide who the President Elect is.
If Al Gore had won I would not had been such a sore looser, though I don’t like him I respect the Office and position of the President and he would had been my president just like Clinton was and GW is now.
This fight and hate in between parties is a political phenomenon that is NOT healthy to America and the only ones laughing are the Canadians, French and Radial Moslem countries, among other countries that are far less perfect than the USA but are jealous of this greatest country on earth!
GOD BLESS THE USA and all of our Presidents!

He did not,and if people stand by and allow this sort of thing to happen without a public outcry, what is voting about. They should banish electoral votes and concentrate on the public vote.So much for the Republic.

Since he's almost out of here, as far as I'm concerned he did. He's already served his time and we can't go back and change it, so it really doesn't matter.

No. I don't. Isn't it nice having a brother in the state you're dependant on for the election? Gee, how coincidental.
