Because they hate themselves. They want others to hate themselves as much as they do.

Low self esteem: People who criticize others feel bigger and better when they try to make other people feel smaller and less worthwhile.

It probably make them feel better about themselves, since they may not be happy with themselves.

  • Because they have not learned how to live life with positive energy. You can be marginalized as a kid, or adult, yet still find reserves of strength within to overcome all of that negativity.

Is this question being asked critically? People who are insecure about themselves sometimes feel by putting down others they elevate themselves. Judgments made about others are usually projections of judgments being made about yourself.

I would guess that they suffer from low self esteem and this behavior has become so automatic that they don't stop and think they have a choice. No doubt this is the way they were treated at home, criticized and put down. Very sad indeed.

I have to agree with some of the other answers. The criticizers are usually unhappy, disgruntled and perhaps with a little bit of superiority complex tossed in for good measure. I have met some people that are terribly unhappy and miserable and they go out of their way to make anyone around them just as miserable.

Obviously they have a reason for their behavior and I at least try to strike up a conversation with them in hopes of possibly helping them if at all possible. If not, I'll move on.

Im not sure about this one. Id like to think it was because they are unhappy about themselves but to be honest I wonder whether these people just have an enormous ego and always want to be tops. Its a natural thing in human nature to compete and they are just taking it to extremes. I wonder what other people might think about this?

All of the above. People criticize others as a projection of the bad feeling they have about their own self. There is no sense in getting into a criticism contest with one of these people.
