From what my doctor friends tell me not only the medical residents but the regular doctors too are overworked.
This is one reason why they schedule surgeries for early morning hours so that the operation theater staff and the surgeons will be fresh after a night's sleep.

Definitely. But being able to keep working without rest is an important skill for doctors, for military, for fire-fighters and rescue workers. It is possible that it is a weeding process to ensure that docs will get their asses out of bed when the nurse calls to tell them their patients are cratering.

Yes, I think they are. I also think working too many hours can have a negative effect on their ability to make important decisions, regarding the health of their patients. Sleep deprivation and medical work, is a bad combination.
