Software generally doesn't detect a microphone (unless it is a USB mic, in which case ignore me completely).
More likely what you are looking to change in your settings is the input device, which would be your sound card. This can be any number of things depending on your motherboard (if it is onboard sound) or your sound card (if not on board).
Also, you would probably want to make sure that the recording port of your sound card is not muted. You can check this with windows volume control at Start -> programs -> Accessories -> Entertainment -> Volume Control.
Once in, click Options -> properties. Now here, select the sound card you want to work with and the recording option. Make sure that Microphone is selected in the list below. Now click okay.
You will see the window change. Make sure that the box under Microphone is selected or it won't record.

You're reading I just got a new headset with a mic, and I want to change it to default mic. But when it shows software, this doesn't come up even though I put it in. How do I fix this?
