major brands have been selling for the last 6 or 8 years sets labled "HD Ready" they have the inputs for HD in componet, DVI and now in HDMI - sets built in the last 1-2 years have digital tuners but NOT all are HD some low end sets are labled SDTV - this is a set with a digital tuner but only shows 480I signals, what a waste of money.

And yes, componet inputs will handle a 1080I signal - IF THE SIGNAL IS IN 1080I format!!!

Sorry to disagree with the other people posting answers here, but yes, cable and over-the-air HD are 1080i broadcasts, and that certainly can be supported with component video (YCbCr) cables. Do not confuse component video with composite video.

In fact, my HD set is a bit older and doesn't have HDMI, but my HD TiVo has component video in addition to HDMI, and the component video works fine with my set. 1080i looks great!

now its rare but its possible that i may be wrong. but from what i know component CANNOT support hd. i know this for 2 reasons. a. yellow, red, white cant do any hd. yellow red, white, green , blue can only support as high as 480i which some consider hd but lets be honest. its not hd. ive heard to it refered to as ed(enhanced definition). the cable company advertises free hd with digital cable packages. in my town gives you the cable box and the ed(as ive been told it is) cable to you for free. however if you want real hd you have to ask for a totally different box and buy your own hdmi cable. so i DO NOT believe component supports hd. not only that all hd tvs have hook ups for hdmi cables. if component supported hd why would they need the hdmi inputs????

I think you are confusing component video with composite video.
