In my student days in france and Germany, it was common to hitchhike into town - saved on bus fares - the longet journey I ever hitched was from Rosslare ferry port to Belfast - and the guy even dropped me right off at my front door!

A long time ago I hitchhiked from Monterrey, CA to Vancouver, BC. Had a great time-got stopped by the Highway Patrol a couple of times for hitching on a freeway. But these days I couldn't think of doing it.

You're a mindreader. I was going to write a hitchhiking question. A million years ago I hitchhiked from Monterrey, CA to Vancouver, BC with my belongings in a Hamm's beer case. Great time-got stopped by the Highway Patrol a couple of times for hitching on the freeway. These days I wouldn't think about it. When are you going to Reno?

I've never hitchhiked myself, but when I was in my twenties and thirties, I used to pick up young kids around town that were hitching with their skimboards, etc. Then one day, I picked one up who looked about 13 and he asked me to go to a party with him. I abruptly pulled to the curb and never did that again.!!

Many, many times when i was younger.. late 70s all over the western US..worried my mother sick and I regret that, but don't regret the hitch hiking.. i saw a lot of things and places. ;) I wouldn't do it now though. last time I tried it took me all day to get about 10 miles. Nobody stops in the US anymore anyway except the occasional brave soul. LOL I once got a ride from some young lady who listed to the same disco tape all the way from Missouri to LA..I finally snapped at her and got booted out in the desert and she slammed the door on my leg and left a huge gash with blood pouring down into my shoe so some guy stopped and had a bottle of whiskey and I poured some on the cut and we got smashed the rest of the way to LA. ;)

Many times. my longest hitch hike was from Western Colorado to the lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas about 1350 miles in 1959. When I attented university I hichhiked home a couple of times each month. I had a sign painted on my suit case saying what Univerisity I attended and that I was a student going to ???. I would not hitchhike today it is too dangerous. I have also given many hitchhikers rides. but no more. I was only afraid once. I had good reason I found out years later. I had given Ted Bundy a ride from Western Colorado into New Mexico not long after he had escaped from the jail in Glenwood Springs, Colorado.
