    It was a song, sung by Marilyn Monroe. I imagine the song's title and subject matter came about as a way to further the notion that women are vapid, materialistic, giggling morons.

    As said, it was a song. But the phrase was invented by the marketing people frm De Beers, the diamond miners and (for a long time) near-monopolists.
