Help answer this question below.
The rate seems to vary from airline to airline - domestic flights within europe have a weight limit of 20 kg! The excess baggage charges are very high - it would be cheaper to mail stuff home! Or - if you have things that you do not need (eg clothes etc) give them to a charity shop before you leave
Have you thought about UPS or fedex? You could send everything home in a couple of days.
I do this all the time. Most airlines are liberal on international flights. It also depends on the class of your ticket. There is no difference on the allowance in economy class but with a y-class ticket, the clerks are a little more lenient for overweight bags.
The way I see it if you paid rock bottom price for the ticket, the airline is justified in strict weight requirement.
I was never hassled about baggage weight when I flew Business class.
On my last return trip from LA, I paid $140 extra for extra baggs and extra weight. Considering UPS costs, that's a bargin.
Personally, if I have that much stuff, I would ship it, and maybe one of my bags, home, rather than pay extra to take two bags and more home. ;-)

why was this answer downrated?????
by dea_ex_machina on May 23rd, 2009
No - the limit for flights within europe is 20 kg! no matter how many cases you have, the limit is 20 kg!
You really ought to check with your airline first to see what you can carry - most airlines have an online facility for checking these things, and for checking the costs for excess baggage.
Last time I flew transatlantic, the baggage allowance was 30 kg.

Ahh you are saving me!!! Its all ive been worrying baout....
How many lbs are is 20 kg?????
so If I buy a suitcase here right now and so they all are equally under 20 kg I will be good??
by angela on May 24th, 2009
2.2 pounds/kilogram
by Ron C on May 24th, 2009
the 20kg weight is TOTAL!!!! you can spread your 20kg across 3 suitcases, or put it all in one - but 20kg total!
the size of the suitcase is irrelevant (except for handbaggage - that is very strictly controlled by size) - it is the weight that is the issue for hold luggage.
20 kg = 44 pounds.
But.. are you flying within europe? or are you flying home again?

Unfortunatly the rates and forgiveness vary. Other respondents suggest you check the airline for their particular policy. I gave you weights in approximates. Exact allowances vary widely and they can be overlooked by a kind desk agent.
I've traveled internationally for more than 40 years, excess baggage rates are still a crap shoot. You won't really know until you check in, even if you check the official policies. I just keep a credit card handy.

Okay ah you definetly know exacly what you are taking about! More than 40 years! ah This is my first time travelling alone... so I need to know these things!

I guess the first flight can be daunting. O.k. here is the best way I can think of doing this. Buy two suitcases (strong ones) and fill them with what you think you will need. Weigh them with an accurate scale. Buy your tickets and check the airlines weight and baggage policy. Check them online at the airlines' home page. Don't depend on me or even a travel agent. If the bags are below the limit, you know what you will pay. If they are above, re-evaluate what you need and lighten the load. Ship the excess UPS or DHL (the most reliable from Europe in my experience). It may cost more but not as much as loosing them in shipment.

Further: Make sure that you have address tags securely affixed to your bag. I have metal tags riveted to some and even used a magic marker on others. Also put an identifying marker on the bag like a bright ribbon or big neon orange x. Many bags look alike. Enjoy Toronto, it's one of my favorite cities and stay away from Younge Street until you're older. You'll understand that after you live in Toronto for awhile.
Good luck,
Ron

if you are travelling from Spain to Toronto - that is a totally different kettle of fish - that means you are travelling transatlantic - not within europe!!! The weight allowance of 20 kg is within Europe !!!! So you should be ok!
Which airline are you with?
Look at this site - this is Air Canada - they have more generous allowances http://www.aircanada.com/en/travelinfo/airport/baggage/checked.html
Check with the airline first!
Google: baggage allowances (name of airline)
So you have just finished a 3 month exchange program? Did you travel out there with someone else?

I went on my first flight alone at 6 years old - although obviously my parents made all the arrangements for me, and I was classed as an "unaccompanied minor" so I had people to escort me to the plane etc.
