  • The pope did give Henry VIII a divorce - to Anne of Cleaves. (Wife 1). However he refused to give a divorce after that as the roman catholic church didn't permit mulitple divroces (didn't want to promote a society that vows made infront of God didn't seem to matter). That is why Henry 'invented' his new religion of having a 'chuch of England' where he could bully the bishops into doing as he said. Anne Boyln (wife 2)was beheaded for this reason (for trumped up charges of adultery).
  • xuz in catholicsm you cant get a divorce. thats why they made annullments lol/
  • He had no particular reason to. You have to understand that in Catholic tradition, even today, a divorce is ... well, totally bad. Basically not allowed - you have to prove that your marriage was, in fact, never a proper marriage - never valid - and that thus, it can be annulled. Divorce was NEVER done back then. It existed, the same way surviving conjoined twins does today. Sure, it happens, but it sure as hell ain't gonna happen to you.
  • It's against their religion to have a divorce, but he found other ways. Beheading, annulment, yadda yadda.
  • Politics. If the pope was seen to bend knee to a king, the other kings would have started getting out of line. It's all a power game, hidden behind the appearance of religion.
  • Actually, he denied him an annulment. This was for a marriage that he had petitioned and received dispensation for (Catherine of Aragon had been his brother's widow). It wasn't until 20 years later that Henry sought an annulment on the grounds that the original dispensation has been invalid and that the marriage had never been valid. Pretty shaky grounds religiously and the pope didn't go for it.
  • Because the pope is an idiot old man with too much power.
