to prove that you are over the legal drinking age.

You don't specifically need a driver's license, just some form of photo identification that proves you're old enough to buy alcohol. The driver's license is just the most common form of that I.D.

You don't have to have a driver's license. You can go to the DMV and get an official ID. Most places want an ID from a state source, probably because they are harder to fake--but certainly not impossible. I've seen many.

It's more convenient to carry your driver's id to prove your age, than to take your mother with you when you shop. A license to drive is not a suggestion that you Drink and Drive!

Good point. Many people actually do drink and then drive in the US. Usually after just one or two drinks but I have seen people get a good old buzz off that and just drive on home. I think it's actually a culturally acceptable very dangerous Americanism to drink and drive. Older generations do it a bit more because let's face it, drinking was a way of life 40-50 years ago. They practically designed suburban streets to be so wide back in the 50's and 60's that people could drive home roaring drunk without hitting the parked cars on either side of the street . Ah, the bad old days.

For the same reason they have Brew Thru's and drive thru liquor stores, for that drunk driver that's constantly on the go, places to go, people to hit....
