I had a bad experience with a gyno 3 years ago. I am a virgin and the exam was painful and traumatic. I need to go back but am afraid. Are there any tips to make the experience better?

Yes....get a female gyno and when you go into the room TELL her about this experience, so she will be very sensitive and gentle.

Change doctor. I would suggest an experienced woman doctor. Good luck.

Ask your friends or family for recommendations of a gyno who may be more gentle, and make sure to stay relaxed during the exam.

Bseides getting a doctor - like another woman doctor - who empathizes better with the experience, one thing that will absolutely help is to consciously relax everything "down there" - belly, vagina, etc. The more you tense up due to fear, the more painful any medical procedure will be.

This also works for anal exams, injections and for throat exams by the way. Relax the muscles, it will hurt much less if at all.

  • This is a no-brainer. Get a new doctor. Tell the new doctor what happened before and make sure he/she understands. There is no reason for you to be in pain from an exam.

  • I always tell my doctor I have NO QUALMS about punching if I'm irritated or find something painful! I speak my mind. . . .he/she "listens up". . . .and alls well ! The ONLY person I care about propitiating in an OB/GYN exam. . . . .is ME! Thus, I get "handled" with gentle care!

  • Yes. Call around to find an OB/GYN that specializes in anxious patients. You don't have to say why.
