  • If all else fail, this could just be a problem with the CDROM drive itself. Try using a different CD or getting a can of air and blowing out the inside of your drive to remove any built up dust or dirt. This also is often a symptom of "not-enough-ram-itis". A lot of programs eat up your memory very fast. Perhaps you have the horrible spyware/adware scenario. Download Ad-aware and remove any spy/adware that it finds (make sure you update the definitions). When you have a lot of these "parasites" on your computer at once- your computer could get to where sometimes it will hardly even boot up at all. Adding RAM (memory) could help to solve the problem very easily as well. I would also suggest you run a virus scan.
  • ArmoriseDOTcom gave very good advice about making sure viruses and spyware are removed from your system. I would add some additional things in case adding RAM and removing spyware and viruses does not cure the problem. First, make sure you have the latest updates for your BIOS and the latest drivers for your motherboard chipset, display adapter (video card,) sound card and of course the CD drive. If this still does not fix the problem, try booting into safe mode and removing everything under CD-ROM drives in Device Manager, then reboot to normal mode and let Windows re-detect it.
  • you could also have an IRQ problem. it handles resources that the computer deems relevant to make the required operation work. but sometimes they clash with one another. make sure that all your drivers are up to date(not before you run a full v-scan and spyway scan as talked about b-4) make sure the cd plays in another device. are you running too many background apps.? try suspending them. just leave systray and explorer alone. there are a lot of issues that can cause a lock up. need to know os , cd drive, system, age, and etc. plus has this comp. ever been connected to music download sites(full of nasty malware). barrbou
  • I can agree with the Chipset thing and/or the IRQ's. But this has nothing to with Adware or Spyware. I would also bet that there is nothing at all wrong with the CD ROM Drive.
