    Basically, Applique(or appliqué) is a technique in which pieces of fabric are sewn onto a foundation piece of fabric to create designs. It is particularly suitable for work which is to be seen from a distance, for example, Banner-making. Normally appliques consist of the desired shape zigzag stitched onto backing material, then the entire thing is sewn onto the material being decorated.
    Padded applique has had an extra layer of padding sewn beneath the applique, to give the applique depth.Here is a quote from a site by an expert telling how she does it:
    The wall hangings I make (see the accompanying photographs) have a kind of three-dimensional quality, a depth and richness that ordinary flat applique can't match. My secret: I pad each element of the picture as it is applied to the cotton fabric "front" . . . and I pad the entire piece again when I put the backing on. This way, it's possible to get a "rounded" look without having to stitch through five or six layers of tatting all at once.
