R-ken-saw but only when referring to the state. When it refers to the city, it's r-CAN-says. The reason it's pronounced different is to separate it from Kansas.

I have lived in States bordering on Arkansas for 90% of my life and my family has owned and operated property there for 170 years. I have never heard anyone pronounce it Are-Kansas. Look in the dictionary. Other answerers-why in heavens name do you give points for such a stupid question?

When I lived in Kansas, I learned the Arkansas River from where it entered on the Colorado/Kansas state line until it exits at the Kansas/Arkansas state line by state of Kansas statutes is to be pronounced Are-Kansas; while in all other places it is Ard-ken-saw.

I once went to Kansas and they called it Are-kansas but I've lived here all of my life and it's always been pronounced Are-ken-saw. So is the river.
