They drove with both hands on the wheel. They didn't break off face to face conversations to take a call. They didn't talk and giggle in theaters. Poor souls.
We carried pigeons everywhere we went and tied notes to their legs and released them when we needed to let mom know we'd be home late.
Kept both hands on the wheel and drove in silence (and safety).
Hitch hiked when there car broke down. Walked miles to a gas station to get a can of gas for their car that ran out of gas. Drove all the way back home to tell your hubby to do something important cuz you forgot to tell him before you left....etc.
Got there quarter out.
Waited until they got home to make and receive phone calls.
fight over greasy payphones.
Used landline phones or dropped a dime in the phone booth (they actually had phonebooths!) to make a call. Then they made plans to be someplace at a certain time and then waited until the person got there. Or sometimes you just went out and found each other at your local hangouts. If you ran out of gas, you walked to the nearest gas station to get a can of gas.
Used tin cans tied to a string to call each other.

Not too long ago they used smoke signals.
I went to high school in the 60"s (yes they really had schools back then), and our family all used CB radios in our cars and at home to communicate. It was reliable back then, and if we saw someone needing help one of us with a radio would stop and call in the emergency to one of the local radio club members on an emergency channel. The number of emergency stops we had to make to help people on bridges or the freeway went way down when they installed emergency telephone call boxes on those roadways in the 70's.

Talking on hands-free phone while driving reduces you driving about the same amount as being legally drunk. Without the hands-free, you would barely be able to walk, let alone drive.
