Help answer this question below.
At the major-league level, the answer is Johnny Burnett of Cleveland, who had nine hits (seven singles, two doubles) in eleven at-bats, during an 18-innings contest against the Philadelphia A's on July 10th, 1932. His side still lost, 18-17: the game saw a total of 58 hits, a record which still stands. The win went to A's pitcher Eddie Rommel, despite allowing 29 hits and 14 runs in 17 innings of relief!
In a nine-innings game, the record is seven, held jointly by Wilbert Robinson of Baltimore (June 10th, 1892) and Rennie Stennett of Pittsburgh (September 16th, 1975).
Cesar Gutierrez had 7 hits in 1970, without making an out while playing for the Detroit Tigers versus the Cleveland Indians. It was a 12 inning game, which Detroit won, 9-8. The fact that he was a .235 career hitter made his accomplishment all-the-more curious.
