Do you think it's right for people to provide useless, rude answers? Or would it be more beneficial to everyone if they answered questions with the intention of providing help, instead of being "funny"?

Life is too much fun to be taken entirely serious. So I don't. This is one of the guiding principles of my life. If you try to be serious all the time, then you miss out on much of the fun that life has to offer. So, I say loosen up a bit and laugh.

    G'day Loharv,

    Thank you for your question.

I generally answer questions with the intention of helping people. However, there are some lighthearted questions which I answer in a similar spirit.

I oppose rudeness. Indeed, I am a strong believer in politeness and civility on the Internet which is why I answer questions in the way I do. Words that are sent over e-mail or published on the Internet are often interpreted in a way that the person who wrote them didn't mean. They just didn't think before they posted or sent the e-mail. I think that most people are guilty of that including myself.

    Regards

No on both counts. Some may think my answers useless or rude occasionally, but even when they are, they are not. I point out people's grammar and spelling errors with humor, sometimes even by answering a different interpretation of the question from what was intended.

To be perfectly blunt, the only things people can effectively help you with here are their opinions. Answers are often factual, but you can't exactly cite them as references in a paper, and it's harder to get a bona fide factual respose here than it is to look up your subject using Google.

The root word in funny is fun. And that, sir, is why we are here. I doubt many of us volunteer for these twelve hour shifts purely in order to provide a service to society.

If somebody had fun at your expense, perhaps the best thing to do is to simply write them off, or possibly learn to laugh at yourself. Or other people... that's fun, too.

Whatever floats their boat. No, it's not right but stuffing a gag in their maw isn't either. Karma will get them in the end is how I look at it.

I'd rather have someone answer with humor if they couldn't give a real answer. It's better than someone being a jerk or just being ignored.

Laughter is the best medicine. I feel bad for people who are so serious they don't enjoy life.

Sometimes some questions are so silly, that they just deserve a silly answer.
