In this day and age why should a woman get alimony?

• So you feel that if you marry someone that entitles you to a payday? By the simple fact that you got married you deserve a piece of you husband?

• Note I did not say anything about child support. If you make a baby it is your responsibility to support your offspring. The question was why does a woman deserve to get a piece of her husband just by virtue of being married.

• Yes, I guess I did confuse child support and alimony. But if, for example, one of the spouses gave up working to raise the children that both agreed upon bearing, I would be in favor of that spouse getting compensation for it.

• Assuming both spouses worked and the earning potential for both was not negatively affected by the marriage why should the wife get a paycheck just for being married?
  
  Note: I am not talking about child support or spousal support for a wife who was a stay at home mom.
