Help answer this question below.
To my knowledge there is no way to force IE6 to do this. It has to do with the way the web site you are viewing is coded (HTML). When you click on a link, the command is "Window:Blank" which tells IE6 to open a new "Blank Window" then it will go to the selected site.
If you upgrade to IE7, you will have tabs that will open within the same window.
Sorry I did not have better news :(

You're reading In IE6 is there a way to open links in the same window instead of it opening up a new one? When I click on a link it takes me to a new window but always shows up blank. Any help would be appreciated.

Not your fault. Was just wondering because when I click on a link it will open up a blank window but never goes to the selected site. It never used to do that.

I would suggest upgrading your IE. Sounds like you may have a corrupt file somewhere. You can also try http://support.microsoft.com/search/ to search for your answer if you have not done so already. Good Luck!
