I had to make a paddle for my fraternity Big Brother when I was being rushed and initiated (1957).
It was a tradition for all fraternities on campus....and they were brutally used on the iniatee, to the point of bleeding, as part the final step of the initiation....except for our fraternity. We ceased the practice of "paddling" many years before. Our paddles were strickly ornamental. We DID, however, have many rough hurdles to jump before being accepted as a Brother.
