The Baroque style emerged as a revolt against the rigid conventions of Italian Renaissance classicism. Instead of the straight lines of classicism, curved and broken lines appeared. Decoration became more important and elaborate, and spaces became more complex.
The Catholic church used it to inspire its viewers, the style used elaborate effects to appeal directly to the emotions.

Thanks! It happened in music. Music had much more "ornamentation" with Bach leading the pack. There were more "curves" in music also. I love comparing the visual art, music and architecture. I've been drawing today. Not too far is my Greek architecture. I'm wondering what kind of rulers I'll need for those straight lines. I have all kinds of plastic ones. First I'll draw the different kinds of columns. Then I'll go to parts of ruins left that aren't complete. Yes, some of the paintings are so emotional and huge. Some take my breath away with their beauty.
