Yes. My employer has cut salaries twice this year.
Unless you have a contract, they can do what they want. They can fire you for no reason, demote you or reduce your pay. You can take it or leave it. If you are in a union, that has a collective bargaining agreement with the company, or you have your own individual contract(very rare) the rules change.
It probably depends on where you live. In Indiana, we are an "at will" state. They COULD FIRE you. In this economy, the choice of many places is to fire people, or "restructure", paying people less, or making them work fewer hours (meaning they get paid less).
If you still have benefits (if you had them to start with), and those aren't reduced, feel lucky. Many have lost not only the income, but the benefits that allow them to go to the doctors', etc.

You're reading Can my employer demote me and reduce my pay because of the bad economy? They have said it is not me performance and I will still be performing the same job duties and that they are just restructuring.
