People will argue both sides...but I tested it once, hot water in one ice tray, cold water in another ice tray....Hot water froze faster.

The hot water will freeze faster in the right conditions. I think it has something to do with the water evaporating while it cools.

When I was a kid, a teacher said it was false...although it never made sense to me, I never questioned it.

It is generally true that cold water will freeze faster than hot, but if you have a metal flat pan and fill it with hot water, it could freeze faster because the heat will melt the ice under the pan, causing better contact with the pan and any ice left (and/or the elements themselves).

Unless you gimmick the test conditions, cold water will always freeze before hot. Won bets on it. In Minneapolis in the winter, it was always good for a few free beers in a bar. The cold water would freeze the instant it hit the sidewalk at 20 below zero. The hot water would still be sitting there wet and steaming.
