I don't see why. It is illegal to pose as a police officer but a collections agent can use any ruse to try to get to the person owing the money. The cops set up sting operations all the time and hordes/droves of targets fall for it. Scam artists pose as grandkids or long-lost relatives who are in dire straights and need money wired immediately to somewhere and sometimes old people fall for it. Liars abound..con artists, scam artists..caveat emptor.:)
Probably not, although the practice is practiced. Most are sure that the point that you owe money will outride the legal issues of the telephone call, and will claim that you contacted their office.
Can a law firm (coll agency) collect on something that isn't on my cr reports? I was told that I have to prove that the cell phone debt isn't mine (from '01 or '02) and to file a police report by 30 days. This was removed from my cr rep yrs ago. Michigan.

I had to move out because my boyfriend had assaulted me. A collection agency is now trying to collect unpaid rent from me. Any legal rights?

I have a bill collector calling me. I was wondering if I could pay the original debtor instead of the collection agency. The caller said "No", I'm going to guess that it's a lie. Thank you.

You're reading Is it legal for a collections agent to pose as a relative or friend in an attempt to trick a debtor into calling back?

@RosieG - Collections agencies have been calling my home number looking for "Gina" (probably the person who had the number before me). Yesterday, I received a call from someone claiming to be her cousin. That was followed by another call from someone claiming to be a family member.
.
I think those calls were actual family members, but it got me wondering. Collections agencies have considerable latitude in what they are allowed to do to track you down. Does that include impersonation?

We get those calls all the time OS. In our case I think this guy just gave a random bogus number, only it wasn't bogus it was ours. If it is a live human I pick up and explain..but often it is a recording. Oh..not to be mean sweetie, how about them Lakers? :) Happy Friday and please give a hug from Jim & me to our mutual friend! :) ((hugs))
