I rate the question first. I've got nothing to lose by doing that.

I figure if the question was interesting enough to answer, I should give the questioner points whether I get any points for my answer or not.

  • I usually give points when I answer, sometimes I forget though so I always check when they give me points to make sure I gave them theirs.
There are some users who I answer and wait till they give me points because I've noticed they rarely give points to anyone answering their questions and it kind of irks me. Even though it is just points it's wrapped in with courtesy.

points should be based on the question/answer. Not based on if somebody gave you points or not.

I usually rate the questions I ask. Sometimes I forget. The rating of my answer doesn't have anything to do with it. Sometimes I rate a question and don't answer.

I always give people who answer my questions points, because they are generally helpful, and because I appreciate their effort.

    I don't wait until I get a thumbs-up first.

I try to uprate all questions that I answer. I said "try" because sometimes, the points don't register (due to a glitch) or I have run out of points for that person.

Rating the question is my way of making sure that I would not answer it again. If I have rated it, most likely it means I have already answered it.

Also, if it is interesting enough for me to answer it, I think it also deserves points.

If I like the question and I think it is a good question I rate it and give some plus points, as soon as I read the question.

But how would I know that the first person who gave points was the asker? And I take that points are given for what is perceived a good answer. As I can't ask the same question as the one already asked, I believe that it would be better to acknowledge a good answer given.....You asked a good question, though....+5

It's too random for me to declare a definite habit, though everyone gets points from me in the end, some way or another. Unless it's a real insult or something, which then I just don't do anything to.
Sometimes I forget though, well, shmite happens yo. >_>

I tend to forget to give points when I answer. It goes to the thank you page, and I back out two screens, pretty automatically.

So, hopefully, I'm drawn back to the question by a comment or ratings (which is why I keep them on). Then, I will DEFINITELY UPrate the question and sometimes the other answers.

I don't downrate, anymore. I LIKE my 100% + ratings given and want to keep it right there.

    1) I almost never rate the question first.
I usually wait for some kind of feedback to my answer.
It must not necessarily be a rating, it could also be a comment.
If there has been a positive comment on my answer, I thank for the comment by giving the rating.

    2) Just as I give points to the answerers of my questions already for the fact that they are answering my questions, I give points to the askers of questions that I answer for reading my answer. Because I think that even if a question is very interesting, the asker does not deserve aknowledgement if they do not read the answers. (Of course, someone else could also have given the rating, but I assume that could have been the asker).
I prefer also the askers to know that I gave them the ratings.

    3) However, if I do not want to answer a question at the moment, but find this question very interesting, I could also give it points.

And I also often give points to a question immediately if it has a negative rating which I do not approve.

I actually rate the question based on whether or not it it worth rating .. I gave this a big +1 because I have only had a day to get acquainted with the place and I'm still figuring it out. This gives me insight to how people in general will dole out their points.

Sometimes I amswer first and then realise that I forgot to rate, so I have to go back and rate the question, but usually I rate the question before I even decide whether I am going to answer it or not!

    buxtonite ..slowly losing my mind

I used to rate it first up and then answer it .. but lately I wait until I get an answer/comment back as there seems to be a lot of 'no points' being given by the person(s) who posts the question or answer, they seem to love getting points but hate giving them out ... sorry but I don't like selfish people

Its a good question, but difficult to answer. I think its best to approach both question and response(s) without expectations. I've often found that my "off the cuff" responses were rated better than some of the ones I put some serious thought into.

You're reading Do you wait till someone gives you thumbs up to your answer first, then do you rate the person's question up after that? i think it all depends on how much thought is put into the question/answer - which can also be phrased in the following ways:

  • When you do Q & A on AB, do you rate the question first or do you wait for your answer to be rated before you rate the question?
  • Do you give points before the person who asks the question points? Or do you wait till they give you the points first? Hope that made sense.
