The simple answer is a big freakin' neon sign with big freakin' red letters stating NO! But you can limit the risk by being smart.

It all depends on how smart you use it. We all get 'pop-ups' and some of them will even leave spyware...which can cause preformace issues but can easially be removed with a quick spyware scan.

Questionable sites and downloads, (especially ones that are less than 1MB), can pose a threat to your computer's state and preformace as well.

And, of-course, never give your personal information (address, phone, mail, credit-card, ect.) to anything that doesn't look legitimate.

Don't give away ANY personal information. Don't have conversations with ANYONE you meet on the internet. Use a random username and a secure password. Don't mention your friends or let them mention you. No MySpace or other social networks. Use several different username for various sites. Don't buy things online unless from very trusted companies. Create a special email account for registrations only. Use a secure browser and a good operating system.

Or just be careful, like I have been.

    Don't give your last name!
    Stay out of chat rooms!
Don't get in any social forums!
    Turn on Google SafeSearch!
    Get a virus protection filter!
    Get a pop up blocker!
Don't give away email addresses and passwords!

Or, just don't get on the internet.

You can never really be safe on the internet.

Just don't give out information such as phone number, address, school, work, landmarks/stores/places around where you live.
