Help answer this question below.
It stands for the sum of two baseball statistics:
On-base percentage
Plus
Slugging percentage.
So, we need to unpack these two baseball numbers.
Slugging percentage=total bases/ total at-bats.
For the _total bases_ statistic, each single, each walk, & each hit by pitch is worth 1 base, each double is worth 2 bases, each triple is worth 3 bases, each home run is worth 4 bases, and each out by the batter (including sacrifices and sacrifice flies) is worth 0 bases.
On-base percentage = total number of times on base / total number of plate appearances.
For the total name of times on base, each hit is one time on base, each walk is one time on base, and each hit-by-pitch is one time on base.
The total number of plate appearances includes all at-bats, all walks, all sacrifice flies, and all hit-by-pitches; none of the last three counts as an at-bat.
Once you have computed these two statistics, OPS becomes the sum of On-base percentage and Slugging percentage.
Bill James uses the OPS statistic to divide hitters into 7 categories, from best to worst:
.9000 and Above= A
.8333 to .8999= B
.7667 to .8333= C
.7000 to .7666= D
.6334 to .6999= E
.5667 to .6333= F
.5666 and Lower= G
For the record, the mean OPS by all players in Major League Baseball during 2008 was .749.
