    6% = 6/100

    6% * 700 = (6/100)*700 = 6*7 = 42

A percentage of a number is a way of expressing how much of a whole you are talking about.

In this case, 100% represents EVERYTHING of whatever you are talking about.

If you are talking about the entire population of a town (men, women, and children), then the entire population is represented as "100%".

If you want to talk about a subset, or fraction, of the total population, like women, you would ratio the number of women to the total population to figure out what portion of 100% is composed of women.

To make this simple, let's assume the total population of a town is 3,000 people. Let's assume that 20% of them are women. The goal is to find out how many actual women make up the population of 3,000 people.

3,000 people equals 100% of the total population.

To calculate any given percentage of the population, you take whatever portion you are talking about, divide that by the total population (3,000), which gives you a decimal number, and then multiply that by 100 to give you percentage.

For example, assume we are talking about 1,500 people.

1,500 divided by 3,000 equals 0.500 for a fraction. If you multiply this by 100, you will get 50.0%. 1,500 people is half the total population, which is 50% of the total population.

To find an actual number from a percentage, you need to work backwards:

20% of 3,000 total people is what?

20% converted to a decimal form is 20 divided by 100. This gives you 0.20

0.20 times the total population of 3,000 equals 600 people.

A little double checking shows you that 0.20 is one fifth of the total. Which means that if one fifth of 3,000 equals 600, then if you multiply 600 by 5 you SHOULD get 3,000. And you do, so the correct answer here IS 600.

So to find a percentage of any number, first convert the percentage value into a decimal and THEN multiply it by the total number. So 6% of 700 equals 0.06 times 700, which is 42.

Another way to do simple ones is this:

6% means 6 out of every 100. Since you have 7 hundreds in your example, 6 times 7 equals 42.

    I hope this helps.

p = n times 20 divided by 2000... or you could just put the % symbol after the number.

    Beany

    That would be 700 x 0.06

(Basically divide your number by 100 then multiply by the percentage)
