drama classes, part time job so you can go on interviews, be at events, be assertive, market yourself, make connections (supposedly in the US, the only two industries in which one needs connections is communications and the arts; i would also add politics); but you definitely have to be out there giving out business cards, getting emails, etc. leave room for options; you may not make it; one book i'm reading (i don't know if it's the book "rich like them" or one of the Branson (Virgin air, etc.) books says that luck is a comination of being prepared when opportunity happens..

Get some training. There are a lot of people who want the same thing you do. You need to invest some time and energy developing your skills so that you can stand out in audition situations. Which class depends to some extent on the kind of work you want to do, but getting some technique and scene study under your belt can't hurt no matter what direction you go in. One great class I know of in Hollywood is http://www.utteracting.com/ Take a look!

As someone from LA: Get an agent. Priority number one if you want to get anywhere. And by get an agent--you should NOT be paying him/her. They work on commission. They work, you work. You get money, they get money. You see how this motivates both of you? Anything else is just a scam--don't fall for it.

If you are an actor, hire an agent. If you are not an actor, take acting classes, do volunteer work in local theater, and become an actor, then hire an agent.
