    It's the name.

Norton is pretty effective, but it has a couple of weaknesses. There are FREE AV programs that do better.
However, bear in mind that many people stick with IE and McCaffee merely because that is what was pre-installed on their PC. Many people are into the easy, all-in-one solution, and searching the web and/or researching what works and downloading stuff is more difficult and time-consuming than just picking up a box off the shelf.

It's like windows - it was the biggest seller early in the the antivirus market's infancy so everyone knows it (especially people that had to uninstall it until Symantec cleaned that up), but better, cheaper ones have come out, some of them both free and bleeding-edge.

The Symantec corporation still uses the Norton name on some of their consumer products. I'm guessing it's because there are people who still remember Peter Norton's work years ago with those early antivirus and system utility products. It's still good for marketing, I suppose.

Personally, I use the Symantec Endpoint Protection program on my Windows Vista PC at home and it works really well. The consumer versions (anything that uses the Norton name) just contain way too much "bloat" and seem to bog the system down way too much in my opinion.
