What are employers' responsibilities regarding employees' W-2 forms?

    Essentially, an employer is required to provide you with a W-2 by the end of January that properly and accurately reflects your total earnings, taxable earnings, and the correct amounts and types of taxes that were withheld.

    That doesn't mean they have to go out of their way to track you down. It's your responsibility to make sure they have a current address. As long as they've mailed the W-2 to the most recent address you provided them and have it postmarked by the last day of January, they've met their obligations in that regard.

    If you haven't received your W-2 by early in February, contact your employer for a duplicate copy.

    The employer is also required to provide a copy of your W-2 to the Social Security Administration.
