Why do people spell color and favorite "colour" or "favourite"

    That is the International English or British variant. It is used in UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and other former British colonies except the US. The Americans are very innovative and dropped the 'u' for the sake of efficiency (JK on that last part);-)

    I am Australian and that is the way we spell it. we got it from the British who got the spelling from the French.

    That is the English way of spelling them, as in the United Kingdom today. It was changed in Americas version of English

    It is the way Australians, and British people spell things correctly.
    You will also find other differences...
    such as.
    Car tyre (u instead of i)
    Phosphorous (ph instead of f)
    Sulphur (ph instead of f)
    It is correct for us to spell that way.
    The most annoying thing is that I can never get MS-Word to keep the 'Australian' language as a defaul no matter how often I select it as default. It is as though Micro-soft won't allow English based spelling. :)

    It's the British spellings for us in South Africa too. Also get frustrated with MS not sticking to my choice default - always just reverts to American!
