    It's possible that the problem may be the box where your phone line enters your home. However, I think it's more likely your location itself. Ask your neigbors if they have similar problems.

    Five minutes though... well, take a look at how bandwidth drops the further you are from the nearest DSLAM (don't worry about what a DSLAM is);

    * 25 Mbit/s at 1,000 feet (~300 m)
    * 24 Mbit/s at 2,000 feet (~600 m)
    * 23 Mbit/s at 3,000 feet (~900 m)
    * 22 Mbit/s at 4,000 feet (~1.2 km)
    * 21 Mbit/s at 5,000 feet (~1.5 km or ~.95 miles)
    * 19 Mbit/s at 6,000 feet (~1.8 km or ~1.14 miles)
    * 16 Mbit/s at 7,000 feet (~2.1 km or ~1.33 miles)
    * 1.5 Mbit/s at 15,000 feet (4.5 km or ~2.8 miles)
    * 800 kbit/s at 17,000 feet (~5.2 km or ~3.2 miles)

    Notice how bandwidth drops like a rock once you get more than 1.3 miles/2km away? So too does signal quality; there are a lot more "hiccups" as you move further out
    Oh, and that is cable length, which may be different than geographical distance. I think you could easily drive that far away in five minutes, and you may actually be on a different DSLAM entirely.

    Just to be sure though, try this http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ and let me know what you get. I get 1028 down and 385 up. If I am correct, you probably won't get anywhere near those numbers.
