They carry salmonella. Not for me...I hate germy things that live in their own excrement.

Make sure you always wash your hands after you or the kids handle them. They carry Salmonella.
Please read this before you purchase one.

Your need some where safe to keep them, when we had these i kept them in a low stacking box with wheels the sort you keep under your bed,i also bought simple desk lamps and bent them over so just enough warmth for the babys.
They eat salad stuff dandelions, vegs ect good luck if you get them they are wonderful creatures and post some pics :)

they eat vegatable, fruit, dandelions, and insects.
they will need a big area to walk around in.
tortoises can carry diseases so make sure to wash your hands after dealing with them.
they also need to be in the light.
find out what breed it is and look it up online.
    tortoises can grow big too!
    good luck!

What kind of tortoises were they? Different species need different things. Sulcatas can grow to be over 100 pounds and are basically cows with shells. Some such as redfoots actually need some animal protein in thier diet and high humidity (and they get to be the size of a large watermelon). Research the species before getting a pet. You'll need UVB lights and calcium powder in addition to the food and heat light. Eventually you'll need a tortoise table or outdoor pen or indoor pen - aquariums don't work well for adult tortoises. You'll need a humid hide spot, too. Don't forget a good reptile vet - they can be hard to find in some areas, and not all vets are qualified to see reptiles. Visit www.turtleforum.com or www.chelnoia.org or www.tortoisetrust.org if you want to learn more. There are even adoption groups for turtles and tortoises, if you look into adoption. Try www.petfinder.com and rescue groups listed at www.anapsid.org
