  • CACTI have a shallow root system that will absorb any surface water very quickly as in a sudden shower that does not soak deeply into the soil as is typical in deserts. They also have an inner cellular structure that stores what little water they can absorb as well as a thick non-porous "skin" that inhibits water evaporation from the plant. They do not have leaves which would cause rapid water loss by transpiration. Because of all of these factors, CACTI can actually rot from the inside if exposed to too much water. They are meant to survive in hot, arid conditions.
