    Some questions:

Has your ex-roommate moved out of the property? Is that what you mean when he told you he broke his part of the lease and moved out?

What are the paying arrangements your ex-roommate told you he had organised? Was it that he had paid his share of rent - up until the time he moved out - in full, or that he would continue to go halves with you in the rent, etc, even though he had moved out?

If the landlord is only taking action against you, that suggests that you are the only person on the lease, and therefore responsible for making up the rent arrears. You can try to contact your landlord and explain the situation to him, but if he has issued you with a notice of eviction, it would seem likely that you were served with notices to remedy the breach of lease beforehand.

It might be different where you live, but landlords can not just decide one day to evict you (even in extreme cases) without giving you notice first, or at least the opportunity to fix the problem.

I think that unless you can talk to your landlord about possibly stalling the eviction while you talk to your ex-roommate, or unless you are able to take your ex-roommate to court for unpaid rent, unfortunately, you are going to have to cover the costs of the rent that is in arrears.

    Good luck.
