Learned? 11, with my aunt's '80 Civic. Learned the clutch REAL quick. Licensed? 25. I couldn't afford a car before I joined the Navy and didn't need one while I was in the Navy so I never bothered. Unless you're on shore duty, Navy and car ownership don't mix well.

My great-aunt Ruth taught me how to drive in her green 1968 Oldsmobile Delta 88. She'd back the car out of her carport and get us oriented in the right direction (that whole shifting into "D" from "R" thing confused me). I'd slide behind the wheel and we'd go cruising around the almost-deserted-but-paved backroads of the Mississippi Delta town of Inverness on summer afternoons when I was 13, maybe 14. The lesson-du-jour usually involved driving a couple of miles out to the cemetery, where we'd check out the final resting places of all our relatives and loved ones. Invariably, she'd tell me she knew more people in Hickory Grove than she did in town, and invariably, I'd laugh. Conveniently, the road looped around the cemetery - no backing up necessary. I don't know how I did it. I could barely reach the pedals. It was a big car, a lot like the one below

I learned at 15, but driving scared me, so I didn't get my license til age 18. Even six years later, I still don't like it much. I am a nervous driver, so I don't drive very often. When possible, I use public transportation or walk where I need to go. If you live in a city or town with good bus service, you can do this too. You don't need to feel bad about not driving. After all, even some famous people (like Jimmy Fallon) don't like to drive. It doesn't make you less of a person. Driving is just a skill like any other, and not everyone will be good at it.
-
