Importance is subjective, but basically, we need them to align the calendar appropriately. The trip time of the earth around the sun is closer to 365.25 than it is it to 365. So every 4 years, we add a day to balance it out. If we didn't do add the extra day every 4 years, in 730 years, it would the middle of the winter in June...
it has something to do with the earth rotating i think
Because sometimes "Springing Ahead" isn't enough :-)
