Well, I can stand the people who eat fish a lot better than the "I'm a vegetarian, I only eat a little chicken" people.
    "Um... Chicken is a meat."
"But I only eat a little!" or "No, it's poultry!"

    ... sigh.

Anyway! I think for a long time we've thought that fish can't feel pain. In retrospect, this is kindof dumb to think: possible slight evolutionary advantage to not feel pain... and huge evolutionary disadvantages. I bet they process is differently, since they have teeny bitty brains, but since we've now discovered that hermit crabs can feel *and* remember pain (or at least remember that that shell is a bad shell)...

Before that, I was willing to say (tongue in cheek) that fish classified as vegetables under the other definition, where they have no thoughts and feel no pain.

And the catholic church evidently doesn't count them as meat. So there's a pretty widespread precedent for not counting them as meat, and i think people get hung up on that.
You're thinking "meat" as in food that used to be an animal,
they're thinking "meat" in terms of bloody stuff they can't eat on fridays during lent.

They shouldn't, you're right. They are not vegetarians they are pescatarians but many people (including pescatarians themselves) are confused about the terminology.

Yes, it is frustrating. When they ask whether or not you eat fish, say it more slowly - I am a vegetarian. If they ask again, tell them they are confusing vegetarian with pescetarian.

Most people consider fish to be a meat, including myself.

Based on my answer, vegetarians should not eat fish.

I find it interesting that people need to be able label themselves as whatever. I've seen this conversation on this site about 25 times. If you don't want to eat meat, don't. If next Tuesday you decide you want some fish, have some. Who cares if you are "officially" a vegetarian or not.

Who cares what you call it? I don't understand why Vegetarians and Vegans get so snobby about labels. I'm a vegetarian and don't mind answering when people ask if I eat fish. And I don't mind if a pescetarian calls themself a vegetarian. It's an individual choice made for many reasons, and each individual can categorize themselves as they please.

Of course they shouldn't. I don't really know why vegetarians are fine with eating fish. Fish is meat. It makes no sense to me either. You're either a vegetarian or you aren't.

I would expect someone who is a vegetarian to only eat plant foods. Otherwise, they should find a new name.
