Brilliant mind wiped by rare brain virus.
A MAN whose IQ ranked him in the top two per cent of the country before a potentially fatal brain virus wiped out part of his memory has told how he is slowly piecing his life back together.
After suffering from flu-like symptoms two years ago, Darren Egdell, of Vicars Hall Gardens in Boothstown, woke up and couldn't remember how to speak.

A Yale researcher tracing a recombinant virus as it entered the brains of laboratory animals found it damaged selective areas and then vanished without a trace, raising questions about possible mental problems caused by undetected viruses.

If Ted Kennedy’s cancerous lesion is a glioblastoma multiforme, the most common kind of brain tumor, it may have been caused by a virus from the herpes family.

A type of herpes virus called human cytomegalovirus (CMV) is found in up to 80 percent of Americans, though the virus normally produces very few clinical symptoms, is dormant, and usually undetectable in most people. However, more than 80 percent of patients newly diagnosed with the brain cancer glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) exhibit detectable CMV in their blood as well as in their tumors. The Duke team thought this might provide an opportunity to target brain tumors by going after the virus.
