Keep the letter in a safe place and start looking for a new place to live. Don't pay the rent until you have to.

Put the rent into an escrow account and start looking for another place as soon as possible. :)

Find another place to live ASAP. Things are going to get hairy, but if you get ahead of this you'll come out fine.

Did he put it in writing? Do you have a lease? If nothing else, put the money in an escrow account. Someone will come to collect

I think you should seriously start looking for another place to stay right this moment, because that property might be on mortgage.

Is the landlord the owner of the building?

If not, the owner will send you information on what to do with your rent money.

Just hand tight till you hear from someone official.

Maintain the rent to insure if anything happens you have it. Maintain the letter, if the landlord told you that way, also for your security. Locate another place to stay, clean the apartment. Most likely the Landlord does not have the deposit so he instructed you to not pay rent in exchange so you can find another place. Wouldn't wait long, next month might not be as understanding.
