Help answer this question below.
possibly you have an application that is causing the problem at shutdown - this is just a guess, but it is worth checking out. You could also look in Control Panel-Administrative Tools - Event Viewer to see if there are any red-cross messages in applications and System - that would give you the names of a faulting module or whatever might be causing the hang. Have you tried booting into safe mode and seeing if you still get the hang on shutdown? If you do not then that again points to a software problem, perhaps a driver. Anyway, click on Start-Run and type msconfig in the box, and click OK. When the new window comes up, click on the startup tab and disable everything on there ( you are only stopping it all being loaded into memory, you are not permanently removing or disabling the applications). Click Apply and come out and tell the computer to restart. The computer will still hang this time, probably, because the offending data is still active in memory, but when you get back in, click in the box on the new notice that comes up about using system configuration, and then restart again. if you do not get any problems with hanging this time, that would indicate that something that is normally loaded at boot, and found in the start up menu in msconfig is the culprit. If you make sure you only have essential stuff checked in startup ( like antivirus ) and nothing else ( it can all be invoked when needed by the machine or by clicking on desktop icons) then hopefully that particular shutdown hang will not occur again.

I plugged my computer into a station that was running 230v power. It will no longer turn on of course. I would like to know what will need to be replaced to repair it. I was thinking it would be the whole power supply, am I correct?

My power supply stopped working after I tried to scan with my new color laser printer on. Both heavy power users. I checked and am sure the PSU is bad. I installed a new PSU and everything powers up but I can't get a picture. Tried resetting the BIOS.

You're reading My laptop, running Windows XP Professional, is hanging when I do a shutdown. It will only shut down when I depress the power button and hold it until it gives up and turns off. What's the fix?
