Did you ever listen to her in a previous relationship? Maybe a first love? Sometimes songs relate to a specific time in our lives when we first heard them... I'm not talking about the music you hear while walking through a walmart but the special times when the music subliminaly touches you in the moment as if it was being played for you, like in a movie... Belinda Carlisle is one of those artists where lyrics portray love and loss and love again... Most lyrics are easily heard in her songs... A lot of her choruses actually can give you meaning in a way where the song complete lyrics may mean something different...
For example, the lyrics from Circle in the Sand. The chorus goes:
Circle in the sand
round and round
Never ending love is what weve found
And you complete the heart of me
Our love is all we need
Circle in the sand
Now, the chorus alone sounds like heart felt love... But the rest of song is talking about her loss of this love, not a current one...
Choruses are usually sung over and over and for the most part by many, is a lot of the times the only part people take hold of when first hearing a song... I know for many years of hearing this song, I never knew exactly what she was talking about till I actually sat down and listened to it...
But the lyrics still are simple and semi-vague... There aren't too many specifics allowing you to use the song in many areas of your life... It could mean just missing someone, it could be used for someone who left you, it could be used in an emotionally distant yet current relationship, and so on... But I think it's mainly the chorus that catches and the rhythms of the music put you in the ambiance of the situations you are in...

Thanks! I wrote it as it applied to my life as well...
I'm a big fan of music, but I'm the guy that doesn't know lyrics usually until like a year later when I read the sleeve of the CD... I'm more into the riffs and beats of songs, so when I hear a chorus, I don't think about what the artist may be saying, I think of how does it apply to me in my life currently, if it does...
