I'm Russian woman and I married US citizen 1 yr ago.I met him on internet. He is abusing me in that he takes my paycheck everyweek. I feel I'm his slave. Can I divorce him & maintain US rights to continue working and living in US?

The suggestion to open a separate banking account is a good one unless he threatens to harm you. You could do it on your lunch hour from work. If he abuses you physically, you can call the police. It may be possible to obtain a separation without actually divorcing. Are you applying for citizenship or just wish to continue working in the US? You might be able to get some free advice from your local Legal Aid office, or at least they could refer you to an affordable lawyer who specializes in immigration issues.

Being that I was married to a foriegn national, what he is doing is not right. You need to first, open an account that only you have access too, call the people that issue you checks and have them direct deposit it into your account, then save up your money and get a lawyer and divorce his selfish ass.

Check in trhe Yellow Pages for a women's shelter near you. There is a misconception that these shelters are for physically abused women only..not true. Also, they usually have some kind of counselling service and they certainly can give you information about your rights and will help you with the preparations for leaving your husband if this is what you want. Does he realize how bad you feel? Is he deliberately being mean? Or is he a 'traditional' male who thinks this is what husbands are supposed to do (there's lots of that type still around? If you don't really want to separate, find a counsellor and try to persuade your husband to go for couple counselling with you. He may just need a wake-up call! Good luck!!
