Help answer this question below.
If the pitcher and catcher thought that the batter was doing this, they'd probably do one of two things....
1) Start setting up where the pitcher is NOT going to throw it.
1a) Set up way outside, then throw way inside (possibly hitting the batter).
In that ONE second it takes for him to turn his head and look the ball could be thrown and totally catch him off guard...
The reason is because that batter would take a fast ball to the ribs. It's one of many unwritten rules in baseball that the batter can not look at the catcher while the catcher is setting up. Some batters take a quick glance through the corner of their eye, but if they get caught, pegging him with the ball would be proper procedure. A couple years ago Brad Penny caught Shawn Green glancing at the catcher and he got in his face about it. Green denied doing it. That was last time I saw it happen. Peace.
One,the pitcher would throw the ball before he could react, two the catcher could actually change his placement.
Why are the Cubs so trendy? No one I know from Chicago likes the White Sox even though they have won World Series and are a better team?

You're reading What would stop a MLB batter from simply glancing behind him (after signs are given and pitcher is set) to see the placement of the catchers mitt; to give him a hint as to where the pitch will be thrown?

Thanks Old School.
But still leads me to believe that this method of batting would still throw off a pitcher/catcher rhythm and cause a bit more confusion. Not to mention that it is harder to throw a baseball away from a mitt when you have been trained your whole life to throw towards such a target.

@kkotake - Yes, I'm sure it would disturb the pitcher's rhythm. But a 'high and tight' fastball when you're expecting one 'low and away' can disturb more than your rhythm...;-D...
