Yup, when you play and sing at the same time, you're keeping a lot of balls in the air. Each hand is doing something different than the other, plus the tendency is to follow the down beat of your pick hand, with your voice. It's like your making new pathways in your brain, so it takes practice. Just so you don't feel alone in this, when you watch bands play, notice how often the lead vocalist stops playing when singing, or just keeps a steady strumming rhythm, while the other members fill in the more complex rhythms. Even finger pickers usually follow a repeating pattern while singing. So, the deal is, the difficulty is common to nearly everyone. Practice.. Practice.. Practice.. and one day, as those pathways are being formed and your brain is learning to multitask, it'll get easier.
I can't count the number of times it took me to put voice to music playing "Alice's Restaurant" Now it comes easy. Odds are, it'll work the same for you. Good Luck!=0]

Just practice while strumming two or three chords over and over. It takes a while but you'll get there.
