Not in the later models only the occupied seats. In earlier models both bags would be deployed.

Yes in early vehicles equipped with airbags. Newer vehicle NO. The new vehicle sense if a passenger is in the seat and will not waste a bag on the empty seat. There were proposals to moderate the speed of air bag deployment based upon the weight of the driver and passenger and deceleration rate of the vehicle but I don't know if that has come to production.

Not all vehicles deploy airbags and pretensioners if you car has advanced airbags or a Passenger Presence Detector only the driver's airbag and prentensioner will deploy. I would not buy a car without PPD or Advanced Airbags.

  • No, if the car is not equipped with advanced airbags. All 2007+ cars and most 2005-2006 cars are, as are some 1998-2004 cars. In cars with no advanced airbags, yes.

in my car if there is no one in the passengers seat a light on the dash says passenger airbag off....so apparently there is a device in the passenger seat that tells when there is someone sitting there...

My passenger seat is equipped so that if the person seated there is under a certain weight (I can't remember but I think its somewhere under 80lbs) than the airbag will not deploy. There is a signal light near the radio that lights up to indicate that if there was an accident that the airbag won't deploy. Its to protect children, but in my car the kids sit in the back, if possible. I am not sure about if no one is sitting there.

Older cars no. If it's a newer car then the passenger seat might have a weight sensor which will deploy the airbag if the front seat passenger is over a certain weight.
