The famous little black dress, it is as old as perhaps 1850 in Spain. In times of crisis and among the farmers and poor people the black dress was their luxury, they would keep it beautifully clean and patch it when necessary. Today it still happens, who does not have one? Everyone has a black dress because you can use it as many times as you wish among the same people but change the accessories and no one will notice it is the same little black dress. Black is never out of fashion, it is permanently used and it is elegant.

Simple black clothing has been used to make a point since the time of Charles II who, living in relative poverty in exile at the court of Louis XIV dressed simply in black, but dressed his equerry in bejewelled splendour. The point being that the clothes do not make the man. Part of the function of the little black dress is to make the same point today.

I don't know if she invented the idea, of course, but CoCo Channel capitalized on the idea for sure. The moniker "little black dress" was her brain child.
