I recently got married. If i file jointly with my husband and he has unpaid arrears in child support that they usually take out from his federal income each yr will that affect my money?

    ABSOLUTELY, your refund will be taken! You can fill out Form 8379, Injured Spouse, and this should still give you your share of the refund.

    OR you can file Married Filing Separately BUT this will put you both in a high income tax bracket and has some of its own consequences.

    The best solution would be to calculate your withholding so that at the end of the year you get back the minimum or just owe a couple of bucks.

    Congratulations on not living in sin any longer. I hope you are both very happy. When my husband's father was finally caught up with after not paying meager support while his son was a child, they garnished the money from the tax return that he had with his second wife. This was in NY, not sure about FL. Seems like you will end up paying for the debts he accrued... I hope he is really good in bed to make up for this.

    Don't feel bad, the money is going to a worhtwhile purpose and that is the care and upbringing of your step-child.

    If so, you need a tax consultant, not an Answerbag answer.
