Because nobody expected her to sing well. They thought that since she looked like .... well like a train wreck, she couldn't possibly have talent. Everyone knows that talented people are pretty, right? Hollywood says so, so it must be true. . Susan Boyle sang very well, and because it was the opposite of what everyone expected, the video went viral. And everyone lived happily ever after.

I see two main differences: 1. Look at the audience and the judge's faces in Boyle's case vs. Pott's case. In Boyle's case, they were over the top obviously making fun and laughing at her. In Pott's case, there was no obvious pre-judgments, therefore the satisfaction we get from the singer showing the audience and judges they were wrong is much stronger in Boyle's case. Basically, the more opposition someone faces, the more satisfying it is to see them succeed. 2. Choice of songs. Boyle chose to sing a song in English which has sad, heartbreaking lyrics which emulated her actual situation in life. Potts sang a non-English song in an English speaking country which most could not understand and which held no personal meaning to Potts directly. It is basically a case of psychological conditions.
